DHA, CBC to not release sewage in sea: Defence ministry

Karachi: The Ministry of Defence informed the Supreme Court-approved commission on water and sanitation that the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) and Defence Housing Authority (DHA) have been instructed not to discharge untreated sewage water into the sea, according to a news report. The ministry has also proposed that a sewage treatment plan should be installed by August 2019.
The commission was headed by Justice (retd.) Amir Hani Muslim. Before the hearing, the joint secretary of the Ministry of Defence Farooq Hasan submitted details of a previous meeting which was held on 31st May 2018, where the installation of a treatment plant was decided. Hasan also added that as per the directives of the commission, the untreated sewage would be discharged into storm water drains which would be diverted to the treatment plant, and that all of this would be done within four months.
Justice Muslim said that the proposed treatment plant would cater to the entire DHA, whereas the sewage from DHA Phase VIII would be treated at the treatment plant in Creek Vista.
