Nepra allows K-Electric to use RLNG

Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has allowed K-Electric to start using re-gasified liquefied national gas (RLNG) as an alternative fuel, according to a news story. The permission has been granted on a provisional basis so that electricity shortfalls in the country can be reduced.
Prior to this, the KE had filed an application to Nepra for including RLNG as an alternative fuel. The application laid details of how the use of alternative fuel could improve the availability of power plants and reduce load-shedding. The Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) admitted this application on 9thMay, and decided to initiate proceedings to modify the existing mechanism of fuel cost component on account of RLNG. The regulator then allowed for the utilisation of RLNG as per certain criteria.

The inspection team had reported that infrastructure for alternative fuel was available at both gas-turbine based plants, but that the KE hadn’t commissioned the capacity because of which there was rampant load shedding. Nepra has therefore directed the K-Electric to immediately switch to alternative fuel as early as possible.
