Islamabad: The Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) has ordered two steel mills operating in Sectors I-9 and I-16 to shut down on account of contributing to air pollution, according to a news report. This has come after it was noted that the mills were posing a threat to the environment.
An Environment Protection Order has been imposed on two steel mills by the Pak-EPA under the Pakistan Environment Protection Act 1997. When evaluated, both of these mills were emitting 40% smoke, more than the permissible limit. Pak-EPA has said that the plants have to be closed until they meet the provisions set under the National Environmental Quality Standards.
Secretary Climate Change Khizar Hayat has said that more raids and inspections would be conducted as a corrective measure for the protection of the environment.
