Karachi: The Government of Sindh has given a green signal to the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, according to a news report. The Red Line will connect Model Colony with Numaish Chowrangi via University Road and it will also have a dedicated cycling track.
For this project, the University Road, which was widened and reconstructed at a cost of PKR 1 billion in June last year, will have to be dug up once again.
When this project completes, 10 new bus routes will be integrated through this special Red Line corridor. This will incentivise the transporters to operate new buses along this route.
This project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), while its estimated construction cost is PKR 30 billion. The project is expected to complete by April 2020. The Transport Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said that the government had initially planned to start off the project in May, but because of delays seen in the planning phase, it will now start in December.
The BRT will be 21.5 kilometres long and have 22 stations in total. The route will start from Model Colony and end at Numaish through Malir Halt, Malir Cantonment Gate No.6, Safoora Chowrangi and University Road.
