Karachi: The Pakistan Navy initiated a mangrove plantation drive to support the federal government’s goal of creating a ‘Green Pakistan’, according to a news source. This drive has been named ‘Pakistan Navy-Mangroves Plantation Campaign 2018’, and is the third of its series to plant two million mangrove trees along the coastal areas of Balochistan and Sindh.
This campaign was launched in Shah Bandar by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbassi. He addressed the ceremony and stated that deforestation of mangroves not only affects the biodiversity of Pakistan, but also damages the livelihood of dwellers in these areas. He further added that this campaign aims to raise awareness in the general public about the importance of mangroves, and has achieved the plantation of two million mangrove trees stretching from Shah Bandar to Jiwani since 2016. He urged all stakeholders to cooperate and conserve marine ecology and protect maritime economy.
