Rawalpindi: A 75 billion dollar plan to provide Tarbela Dam’s water to the twin cities has been delayed, according to a news report. The report also mentioned that a recommendation has been made to include the project in China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Due to lack of rain, the water supply from Khanpur and Rawal Dam has been decreased. Rawalpindi needs a total of 64 Million Gallons per Day (MGD), and 23 MGD is supplied from Rawal Dam and 6 MGD from Khanpur Dam. Currently, the shortfall stands at 2 MGD due to decrease in water supply from these dams.
Meanwhile, because of lowering of water tables, the water supply from 35 of 410 tube wells has also been reduced. This has caused the total shortfall faced by Rawalpindi to stand at 15 MGD.
The plan to supply water from Tarbela Dam was prepared due to this. The project would supply 200 MGD to the twin cities. However, it has been delayed due to lack of funds.
